The Different Stages of Man
Here Allah points out how man passes through different stages of creation, one phase after another. He is originally created from dust, then from a Nutfah, then from a clot, then from a lump of flesh.
Then he becomes bones, then the bones are clothed with flesh, then the soul is breathed into him. Then he emerges from his mother’s womb, weak and thin and powerless. Then he grows up little by little, until he becomes a child, then he reaches the stage of puberty, then he becomes a young man, which is strength after weakness.
Then he starts to get older, reaching middle age, then old age and senility, weakness after strength, so he loses his resolve, power of movement and ability to fight, his hair turns grey and his characteristics, both inward and outward, begin to change. Allah says: [ثُمَّ جَعَلَ مِن بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ ضَعْفاً وَشَيْبَةً يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَآءُ] (then after strength gave (you) weakness and grey hair. He creates what He wills.) He does whatsoever He wills and controls His servants in whatever way He wants. [وَهُوَ الْعَلِيمُ الْقَدِيرُ] (And He is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful.)
(55. And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the criminals will swear that they stayed not but an hour — thus were they ever deluded.) (56.
And those who have been bestowed with knowledge and Faith will say:
“Indeed you have stayed according to the decree of Allah, until the Day of Resurrection; so this is the Day of Resurrection, but you knew not.”) (57. So, on that Day no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong, nor will they be allowed to return to seek (Allah’s) pleasure.)
Purify our hearts 🧡
Imam Al Bukhari رحمه الله narrated on the authority of Imam Muhammad ibn Sireen رحمه الله that he said “We were sitting with Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه and he had two linen garments dyed with red clay, and he wiped his nose with one of them, and then he said “بخ بخ Abu Hurayrah is wiping his nose in linen garments! There came a time when I would fall senseless between the pulpit of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ and `Aisha’s رضي الله عنها dwelling whereupon a passerby would come and put his foot on my neck, considering me a mad man, but in fact, I had no madness, I suffered nothing but hunger.” *بخ بخ* is an exclamation of amazement among the Arabs. This was the state of Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه who narrated the most Ahadeeth from amongst the Sahaba رضي الله عنهم.
This was the condition for the majority of them! Yet they never let their poverty, their hunger, their suffering stop them from worshipping and obeying Allah! And specifically, it didn’t stop Abu Hurayrah رضي الله عنه from seeking knowledge! While we, living comfortable lives, in relative comfort, Struggle with the most basic acts of worship! Why? Their hearts weren’t attached to this Dunya! They were amazed when a little came their way! Their Dunya was never a Jannah for them!
As Allah says: *وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَتَاعُ الْغُرُورِ* And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion. But we are indulgent in the Dunya and have attached ourselves to it and made it our Jannah, Thus we struggle even while being able!
As Allah says: *بَلْ تُؤْثِرُونَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا* But you prefer the worldly life, *وَالْآخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَأَبْقَىٰ* While the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
We must let go of the Dunya in our hearts, even if we live with wealth! Have your wealth no problem, But let the same الحمد الله you exclaim when you have it, be the same الحمد الله when you don’t have it! This is true Zuhd!(detachment) Empty our hearts of what our hands are full of.
May Allah ﷻ purify our hearts of false attachments to this Dunya and its temptations, forgive our sins and enter us into Firdous.
