Water and Life

10341459_482873821845738_1268450066983614121_nWhen Allah, the Exalted, created the Earth and the heavens, and He wanted to create man on this Earth, He created for him water that is essential for man and other living creatures around him.

Allah, Most High, says:
“Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the Earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? And We have made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” (Soorah Al-Anbiya’, 21:30)
Water is the substance of life, the magic elixir without which life on this planet would be impossible. Allah, the Almighty, mentions water in the Qur’an 33 times in the indefinite form (Ma’un), and 16 times in the definite form (Al-Ma’).

Allah reminds the Believers that He has sent down to them water which is essential for their lives, as He says:
“He it is Who sends down water (rain) from the sky; from it you drink and from it (grows) the vegetation on which you send your cattle to pasture. With it He causes to grow for you the crops, the olives, the date palms, the grapes, and every kind of fruit. Verily, in this is indeed an evident proof and a manifest Sign for people who give thought.” (Soorah Al-Nahl, 16:10-11]

Allah, the Exalted, describes water as being blessed, i.e., productive and says:
“And We send down blessed water (rain) from the sky, then We produce therewith gardens and grain (every kind of harvests) that are reaped.” (Soorah Qaf, 50:9)

The sending down of rain from the Heavens and reviving the earth after it is dead are signs of the existence of Allah, the Almighty. He says:
“Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the Earth, and in the alternation of night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds which are held between the sky and the Earth, are indeed Aayat (proofs, evidences and Signs, etc.) for people of understanding.” (Soorah Al-Baqarah, 2:164)
“And among His Signs is that He shows you the lightning, for fear and for hope, and He sends down water (rain) from the sky, and therewith revives the earth after its death. Verily, in that are indeed Signs for a people who understand.” (Soorah Al-Room, 30:24)

Allah, Most High, reminds the disbelievers that He has made every living thing from water and says:
“Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the Earth were joined together as one united piece, then We parted them? And We have made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?” (Soorah Al-Anbiya’, 21:30)
Allah, the Exalted, describes water as being one of the blessings of Paradise, and states that the people of Hell will be tormented by being deprived of it. He says:
“And the dwellers of the Fire will call on the dwellers of Paradise: ‘Pour on us some water or anything that Allah has provided you with.’ They will say: ‘Both (water and provision) Allah has forbidden to the disbelievers who took their religion as an amusement and play, and the life of the world deceived them. So this day We shall forget them as they forgot their meeting of this day, and as they used to reject Our Aayat (proofs, evidences, Verses, lessons, Signs and revelations, etc.’).” (Soorah Al-A‘raf, 7:50-51)
He also describes water as one of the forces of Allah, the Exalted, and a means of destroying the disbelievers:
“(So it was) till when Our Command came and the oven gushed forth (water like fountains from the earth). We said: ‘Embark therein, of each kind two (male and female), and your family — except him against whom the Word has already gone forth — and those who believe. And none believed with him, except a few.’ And he [Nooh (Noah) ] said: ‘Embark therein: in the Name of Allah will be its (moving) course and its (resting) anchorage. Surely, my Lord is OftForgiving, Most Merciful’.” So it (the ship) sailed with them amid waves like mountains, and Nooh called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), ‘O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers.’ The son replied, ‘I will betake myself to some mountain, it will save me from the water.’ Nooh said, ‘This day there is no savior from the Decree of Allah except him on whom He has Mercy.’ And waves came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned. And it was said: ‘O earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain).’ And the water was made to subside and the Decree (of Allah, the Exalted) was fulfilled (i.e. the destruction of the people of Nooh . And it (the ship) rested on (Mount) Judi, and it was said: ‘Away with the people who are zalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers’)!” (Soorah Hood, 11:40-44) [Tafseer At-Tabari]

Allah, the Exalted, mentions one of the benefits of water, which is purification:
“(Remember) when He covered you with a slumber as a security from Him, and He caused water (rain) to descend on you from the sky, to clean you thereby and to remove from you the Rijz (whispering, evil suggestions) of Shaitan (Satan), and to strengthen your hearts, and make your feet firm thereby.” (Soorah Al-Anfal, 8:11)
“And it is He Who sends the winds as heralds of glad tidings, going before His Mercy (rain); and We send down pure water from the sky.” (Soorah Al-Furqan, 25:48)

Allah, Most High, enjoins us to perform Wudhoo (ablution) at the time of every prayer and Ghusl (ritual bath) with water every time we enter a state of Janabah (sexual impurity). Allah says:
“O you who believe! When you intend to offer Salah (the prayer), wash your faces and your hands (forearms) up to the elbows, rub (by passing wet hands over) your heads, and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of Janabah (i.e. after a sexual discharge), purify yourselves (bathe your whole body). But if you are ill or on a journey, or any of you comes after answering the call of nature, or you have been in contact with women (i.e. sexual intercourse), and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands. Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favor to you that you may be thankful.” (Soorah Al-Ma’idah, 5:6)
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, co
mmanded us to be economical in our use of water and not be extravagant.

It was narrated that once he passed by the Companion Sa‘d Ibn Abi Waqqas, may Allah be pleased with him, when he was performing ablution and said: “What is this extravagance?”
Sa‘d asked, “Is there any extravagance in doing Wudhoo?”
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Yes, even if you are by a flowing river.” (Hadith: hasan, narrated by Ibn Majah)
